This is an untitled painting by Jules Schmalzigaug; we don't know when it was made, or with what materials, but looking at it, you get the sense he's playing with dynamism and rhythm through the act of painting. The real joy here is in the materiality; it's so physical! You can almost feel the thick, buttery texture of the paint and see the gestural marks left by the brush. Take a close look at the top left corner – see those vibrant reds and yellows? They almost vibrate against the darker tones, creating a sense of movement and energy. I love how these elements seem to spill into the rest of the composition. It's like Schmalzigaug is inviting us to witness the unfolding of his painting process. Thinking about other artists who play with a similar approach to abstraction, maybe someone like Sonia Delaunay comes to mind, who was also exploring color and form. Ultimately, this painting reminds us that art is an ongoing conversation, a playful exchange of ideas and approaches.
