Rashid Al Khalifa made "Blue Folds", and what I love about it is how the artist teases out new perspectives within a square of the same blue hue. I can imagine Al Khalifa in the studio carefully considering the angle and depth of each cut, playing with how light and shadow interact on the surface. There is a stillness to the image, but also movement in the way the circles recede into the panel, like phases of the moon. This piece reminds me of the Light and Space movement and artists like James Turrell or Robert Irwin, who are interested in perceptual phenomena and how we experience space through light and form. It's a conversation that artists have been having for decades, this play between what's real and what's perceived, constantly challenging our understanding of the world around us.
