Nicolas Noël Boutet created these firearm decoration designs on paper, sometime between the late 18th and early 19th century, during a period of immense social and political change. Boutet, as director of the Versailles arms factory, catered to an elite clientele, including Napoleon himself. These sketches reveal the artistry and craftsmanship involved in creating weapons as status symbols. The figures are classical and mythical, reflecting the values of the Enlightenment and the aesthetic preferences of the time. But there is something deeply unsettling about the ornamentation of instruments of violence with images of beauty and power. How do we reconcile the artistic merit of these designs with the deadly purpose they serve? What does it mean to adorn weapons with symbols of culture and refinement?
