Patricq Kroon made this pen and ink drawing on paper. It's a tight composition with bold strokes, isn't it? The lack of shading makes the drawing immediate, like Kroon is capturing a fleeting thought. Looking at the mummy figure rising from the coffin, I see the words "Reaction," "Militarism," and "Nationalism." It's fascinating how Kroon uses labels as physical objects. Look at the gravedigger. There's a kind of roughness in the rendering, especially in the face and hands, that emphasizes the effort involved in his work. The texture of the paper and the density of the ink create a visual contrast. The gravedigger holds a shovel with the words "Dutch People" written on it, like a tool for excavating something buried. The bold lines and stark contrast remind me a bit of the German Expressionists, like Kirchner, who were also grappling with the rise of nationalism in their time. What do you think?
