Curatorial notes

Albert Neuhuys made this drawing with pencil on paper portraying a woman doing needlework by a window. The window here is not simply a source of light but a symbol, a threshold between interior and exterior worlds. Consider the symbolic weight windows carry in art history; they can represent enlightenment and a connection to the outside world but also confinement. Think of Caspar David Friedrich's woman at the window: a solitary figure, framed and perhaps trapped, yet also connected to the landscape beyond. The image of a woman working quietly connects to a timeless theme of domesticity. Her presence is a vessel for emotions and memories that trigger a powerful, subconscious response in viewers. The act of needlework, passed down through generations, evolves and resurfaces across different historical contexts, carrying the weight of tradition and personal narratives.
