This green vase was made from pottery around the turn of the century by the Grueby Pottery company. It looks like it was made in one continuous process, built from the ground up. You can see how the artists have worked the clay with their hands, pinching and smoothing to arrive at this form. That matte green glaze, though – it’s a bit of a showstopper, right? It’s thick but also kind of subtle. It gives the vase this velvety, almost moss-like texture that just begs you to touch it. And see how the figure is carved into the vase? That smooth curve in the middle is just gorgeous. The muted green glaze over it makes the figure stand out while also blending in. This vase reminds me of some of the work of Lucie Rie. There is something similar in their approach to form and surface, although Lucie Rie is more colorful. It shows how art echoes and reinterprets itself across time. It's not about answering questions but about embracing the conversations that emerge when you start to think about making.
