This photograph, "Else Wachenheimer-Moos in de tuin met drie onbekende personen, 29 september 1928, Neurenberg?" was made on an unknown date by an anonymous artist. The tonal range, limited by its black and white palette, almost glows. In the upper photograph, the darker figures in the center, framed by the lighter dresses of the two women on either side, appear almost trapped. This is cleverly contrasted with the photograph beneath, where the man sits, self-assured, in a director’s chair. There is a dynamism in the lower photograph, emphasized by the crossed legs of the sitters that imply a casual freedom. But this is complicated by the symmetry of the placement of the figures. I am reminded of Hannah Hoch, and the way she complicated our reading of women in her photomontages. This photograph invites you to look, and then look again.
