This small watercolour on paper by Jakob Danielsen captures a boat of people on grey waters under a pale sky. You can see each brushstroke layered to make the waves, the gentle washes creating the distance. I wonder what it was like for Danielsen, an Inuit artist from Greenland, to make this, maybe a bit homesick? It has that outsider, folk-art quality of someone just quietly getting on with it, trying to capture a fleeting, atmospheric moment, not worrying about the rules. The surface is thin and translucent, kind of like memory itself, with the iceberg reduced to a smudge on the horizon. I love the little red signature in the corner, like a secret code! Danielsen's way of seeing is completely unique and intimate, yet it speaks to the shared human experience of navigating our way through the world. We are all on this boat together.
