This silver medal, created by Theodorus Victor van Berckel in 1776, commemorates Lodewijk Willem Ernst, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, for twenty-five years as governor of 's-Hertogenbosch. The medal presents a classical composition, divided between the Duke on the left and a personification of the city on the right. Note how the figures, though distinct, are linked by gesture and gaze, a common semiotic device to establish a relationship. The circular format emphasizes unity, yet the incised Latin text creates a rigid border, setting up a play between inclusion and circumscription. The image has a formal quality and functions as a tool to transmit status and power, yet the artist employs classical motifs to elevate the Duke, suggesting his rule embodies timeless virtues.
