Editor: This triptych, "Braving the Snow, Our Troops Capture the Stronghold at Weihaiwei," is by Kobayashi Kiyochika. The falling snow really sets a dramatic, almost dreamlike, stage. What do you see in this piece? Curator: It's interesting how Kiyochika uses the snow, isn’t it? It obscures and highlights simultaneously. Almost like memory itself, veiling and revealing. The figures seem to emerge from the blizzard, their determination etched against the ephemeral backdrop. It's a very modern take on the war print, wouldn't you agree? Editor: Definitely! I hadn't thought about that interplay between obscuring and revealing. Curator: It makes you wonder what is hidden, and perhaps what Kiyochika wanted to conceal, doesn’t it? Editor: Absolutely. That gives me a fresh perspective on seeing both the beauty and the complexity of this work.
