Here we see a landscape made by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, a drawing in pen and brown ink, now at the British Museum. Dominating the scene are the mountains; symbols of the sublime, places of spiritual revelation, but also, historically, barriers to progress and understanding. Note the castle perched atop the craggy peak. A motif we have seen since antiquity; a fortress of power, control, and sometimes, isolation. Consider how this image of the elevated stronghold echoes across time, from ancient fortresses to the towering skyscrapers of our modern cities. Even the birds in flight possess symbolic weight. Throughout history, birds are seen as messengers, omens, freedom of the spirit. They remind us of Icarus, soaring too close to the sun. Observe the landscape, not just as a backdrop, but as a stage where humanity's dramas unfold, where symbols are perpetually reborn.
