This is Lorenz Frølich’s illustration nr. 11 til "L`Amour et Psyché", made some time during his career spanning from 1820 to 1908. Frølich, a Danish painter, illustrator, graphic artist and etcher, often drew inspiration from mythology and folklore. Here, we see his interpretation of the classical tale of Cupid and Psyche. Psyche is depicted nude, surrounded by water and figures reminiscent of nymphs. The scene contrasts sharply with the one above, of Psyche laying sick in bed. The tale itself explores themes of love, betrayal, and redemption. The visual representation of Psyche's vulnerability and journey raises questions about female representation in art, and the struggles women face. Frølich presents a narrative that reflects both the beauty and hardship inherent in the human experience. It invites us to contemplate the complexities of love, loss, and the search for wholeness.
