Akseli Gallen-Kallela made 'The Lair of the Lynx' with oil on canvas, and the way he handles the paint really grabs me. The whites aren't just white, you know? There's a whole spectrum of cool blues and violets mixed in, giving the snow this incredible sense of depth and chill. Look at how he's built up the surface, especially on those mounds of snow. You can almost feel the weight of it, the way it clings to the rocks. There are these little flicks and jabs of paint, like he was sculpting the snow as much as painting it. And then, those stark, dark crevices between the rocks—they give the whole scene this quiet, mysterious vibe. It’s so process-oriented; you can see how he's thinking through the act of painting. Gallen-Kallela reminds me of some of those early Symbolists, like maybe a Finnish cousin of Odilon Redon, both dreaming up these deeply atmospheric, kind of haunting images. Art is always a conversation across time.
