Editor: This is Muirhead Bone's "An Orvieto Lane." It's a drawing, and it feels so enclosed, almost claustrophobic. What's your interpretation? Curator: The steep, shadowed lane suggests a social hierarchy embedded in the city's architecture. Bone, working during a period of intense social change, perhaps uses the built environment to comment on the lived experiences of different classes. What feelings does the stark light and shadow evoke in you? Editor: It makes me think of hidden lives. I hadn't considered the social implications of the architecture itself. Thanks! Curator: Art is never neutral. Paying attention to the silent narratives in art can teach us how to see the world around us with new eyes.
