Fritz Syberg made this drawing of a girl feeding animals with ink on paper. Just look at all these hatched marks and nervous lines. Can’t you just imagine Syberg feverishly sketching? He probably didn't even lift his pen from the paper. The farmhouse is a jumble of oblique lines, and the girl looks like she is part of the architecture. The downward strokes around the hen house evoke dark shadows and the simple chore of feeding the poultry becomes rather ominous, don't you think? It's like the birds peck at the darkness. I wonder if Syberg was thinking about Van Gogh when he made this sketch? The humble subject matter and the scratchy, almost violent marks share the same spirit. It's like Syberg and Van Gogh are having a conversation across time, inspiring each other. As viewers, we're invited to bring our own feelings to the table, letting our own interpretations hatch and peck, too!
