This is Henrik van Elvervelt’s eulogy for Feitama, an etching of the poem created sometime before 1781. It marks a moment of grief and remembrance within a community of artists. The poem is an emotional outpouring which draws from the cultural and intellectual life of the Dutch Golden Age. It presents a sisterhood between poetry and the visual arts, both mourning the loss of Feitama. There’s a sense of community and shared identity, a network of male and female artists who cherish and celebrate the arts, and mourn Feitama, a great artist who is celebrated by the Heavens. Here, Elvervelt engages with themes of loss, memory, and artistic legacy, but also celebrates the enduring power of art to transcend mortality. He acknowledges the emotional and personal dimensions of artistic creation and reception. In doing so, he shows how art can provide solace, meaning, and connection in times of grief and sorrow.
