Nul, meaning ‘zero,’ sought to strip art of subjective expression, aiming for pure objectivity. Consider the historical context; the post-war era was marked by a desire to rebuild, to start anew. There's a longing for clarity and order after the chaos of war. Nul artists were not interested in traditional modes of representation. Instead, they experimented with light, space, and industrial materials. In this piece, the subtle grid challenges the viewer. Is it a painting, a sculpture, or something else entirely? Peeters invites us to reconsider our expectations, to find beauty in the understated. It’s a gentle reminder of art’s capacity to reflect and shape our perceptions.
