Editor: This is Kehinde Wiley’s "The Lamentation Over The Dead Christ," created in 2008 using mixed media including oil and acrylic. It immediately strikes me as a bold reimagining of a classic theme, but with a distinctly contemporary and poignant perspective. What readings does the image propose for you? Curator: Well, it's certainly a statement, isn't it? The sheer audacity of taking such a loaded image – the dead Christ – and placing it in a modern context, using a young Black man as the figure, that’s a deliberate and provocative move by Wiley. The vibrant floral background clashes with the solemnity of the subject, creating a visual tension. Do you get a sense of the "why" behind that tension? Editor: I think so. It’s like he's trying to make us confront the historical exclusion of Black figures from classical art, while simultaneously highlighting the ongoing violence and vulnerability faced by young Black men today. Curator: Precisely! Wiley is using the visual language of power and religious iconography to reclaim space, to memorialize and elevate. The traditional pose of Christ is there, but the context is completely transformed. I can’t help but notice how he positions the model with complete intentionality. Editor: Definitely, especially with that ornate jacket and chain. The black vine tracery seems like both ornamentation and almost…entrapment? I do see now how he elevates a marginalized subject by referencing classical art. What’s most revealing about Wiley’s contemporary revision is the way it invites consideration of social hierarchies. Curator: It becomes almost like a prayer, or even a prophecy in ways that both move and unnerve me. Editor: I'll never look at another Lamentation the same way again. This piece demands a different lens, a new interpretation.
