Curatorial notes
Pieter le Comte created this drawing, Zuid-Amerikaanse brik, using pen in gray on paper. The drawing captures a ship battling dynamic waves. Notice how le Comte uses line and shading to convey the ship’s form and the sea’s movement, the waves appear almost like a menacing claw, ready to swallow the ship whole. The composition is structured so that the vessel is diagonal, which adds a sense of tension as it cuts through the waves. Le Comte masterfully employs a semiotic system of visual elements; the ship symbolizes human endeavor against the might of nature. The turbulent sea, rendered with dense, rhythmic strokes, evokes a sense of chaos, a direct opposition to the structured, geometric lines of the ship. The interplay of these elements invites us to contemplate our relationship with the natural world.
