Lech Jankowski made this painting called Trompete zum Hören von Tisch, which roughly translates to Trumpet for Listening to the Table, but is it really about that? It's all about how the paint is laid down, the texture, the drips, the little dots, the process. The surface of this painting is like looking at an old wall, stained and speckled. It’s so physical, like the paint is another skin. Look at the way the stem of the flower, or trumpet, kinda dissolves into the ground, a yellowy smudge that is a bit like early Twombly. And those marks, are they purposeful or accidental? Does it matter? The dark pot at the bottom is solid, but it is also not. It is like Jankowski is asking us to think about what a painting really is. The title is just another layer of abstraction that only adds to the mystery.
