Dimensions Height: 19 in. (48.3 cm)

This ewer, currently held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, was crafted by Franchi and Son. Its gleaming surface catches the light, revealing the intricate details of its form. The ewer is structured with distinct zones: a pedestal base supporting an ovoid body, crowned by a sculptural female figure. The eye is drawn to the relief work covering the body, where scenes of classical inspiration wrap around. Above, a frieze of medallions adds rhythmic complexity. The handle, arching gracefully, mirrors the curves of the ewer's body. The artists play with scale and proportion here. The figure at the top is both part of and separate from the vessel, a semiotic dance that challenges fixed meanings, and invites us to rethink the relationship between form and function. The rich ornamentation, rather than merely decorating, becomes integral to the ewer's presence. It is in the interplay between these elements that the ewer achieves its power, inviting ongoing interpretation and appreciation.
