This sepia-toned photograph shows the Dutch Reformed Church in De Rijp, its surface worked with varying degrees of focus, creating a blurred, dreamlike impression. The way the light dapples across the scene, obscuring details, makes me think about how much seeing is really about feeling. Look at the base of the tree on the left, the artist has deliberately obscured the foreground, perhaps in an attempt to draw the viewer into the image. The scaffolding near the roof leads the eye around the image, creating alternative perspectives on the familiar architecture. I enjoy how it disrupts our view, asking us to reconsider what we think we know about this place. It reminds me a little of Atget's architectural studies, that same sense of being transported to another time, although here we have a slightly more self-conscious approach. Both artists remind us that art isn't about fixed meanings, but an invitation to see the world anew.
