Here's an untitled drawing by Alevtyna Kakhidze, made with what looks like pen on paper. It's this amazing comic-strip-like work spread across two pages. On the left, there's a figure with this quizzical expression asking, "Why do you Ukrainians not surrender?" And then, bam! On the right, the artist throws back a brick of truth labelled 'History' at the speaker. It's as if the artist is saying, "Let me rewrite your biased and flawed history book." I can almost feel the urgency in her hand as she draws. It really reminds me of work by artists like Philip Guston, whose work blends personal and political narratives, as well as Nancy Spero with its activist spirit. I feel like artists are in an ongoing conversation, borrowing and responding to each other's ideas across time. It’s a reminder that art can be a powerful tool to express, resist, and rewrite narratives.
