Hananiah Harari created this intaglio print, "Weather Signals," sometime in the mid-twentieth century. I love how the stark black lines create a language of symbols and shapes. I can imagine Harari, bent over the plate, carefully etching these lines, thinking about the weather, about signs and systems. Maybe he was pondering how we try to make sense of the world through patterns, even when the weather itself is so unpredictable! There’s a real tension between control and chance in this print, like Harari is trying to pin down something elusive. Looking at the shapes, I can see a dialogue with other artists who were also exploring abstraction and symbolism. It reminds me of early modernists like Kandinsky, who sought to express inner states through abstract forms. It is interesting to see how different artists, across different media, are working to decode the world around them, finding new ways to represent what they see and feel.
