Aaron Fastovsky, who lived between 1855 and 1995, made this drawing of a silver scroll ornament using graphite on paper. What strikes me is the care and precision with which Fastovsky renders the object. Look closely, and you can see the subtle gradations of tone, and the tiny floral details. There’s a real feeling of reverence in these marks. The whole thing shimmers! I'm drawn to the section with the bells. You can almost hear the delicate sound they would make as the scroll is handled. The sensitivity of the drawing transforms this object into something precious. It reminds me of other artists, like Agnes Martin, who use simple materials and forms to create works that are both understated and deeply moving. There’s a quiet power in this drawing, a sense of dedication and attention that elevates it beyond a simple illustration.
