Michael Rössler created this print, “Kortspillere”, whose date is unknown, using engraving techniques. This piece invites us to consider the dynamics of leisure and social interaction in the 18th century. During this period, card playing was a popular pastime among the European elite, often conducted in spaces that were typically reserved for men. The image shows a group of men gathered around a card table, deeply engrossed in their game. This seemingly innocent scene opens up questions about the performance of masculinity, class distinctions and the ways in which social hierarchies were both reinforced and subverted through games of chance. Note the way Rössler has depicted each figure with distinct expressions and gestures, revealing the emotions and tensions inherent in the game. Through the seemingly simple scene of a card game, Rössler invites us to reflect on the complexities of social life and the ways in which leisure activities can both reflect and shape our identities.
