This photograph captures students from Schule Schloss Salem during a boat trip on Finnish lakes, sometime in the early 20th century. I like to imagine the act of making this image, the photographer perhaps in their own boat. The water is glistening, the light shimmering all around. I can sympathize with the artist, I wonder what it was like for them to create this image. They may have been thinking about the best angle, how to capture the students in motion, and how to keep the shot in focus despite the movement of the boats. There's a calmness to the surface of the photograph which I admire. It’s like a conversation between the students and the photographer. They’re exchanging ideas, and inspiring one another, which is how artists have always worked. Ultimately, this photograph is a reminder that art is a form of expression, embracing ambiguity and uncertainty. This allows for multiple interpretations and meaning over fixed readings.
