Hiroyuki Tajima made this intriguing print called ‘A Hunting Ground’ in 1968. Imagine the artist layering the red ink, then wiping away areas to reveal the colours underneath. The image is built up, shifting and emerging through trial, error, and intuition. There's an energy here, right? I sympathize with Tajima, wondering what it might have been like to create this hunting ground. Maybe he was thinking about a space where different elements collide, a place of pursuit and maybe even of danger. The texture is so rich; that dominant red, almost like dried blood, speaks to the physicality of the medium. Look at those scratchy lines. How do they communicate a feeling? What is the intention or the meaning? Tajima, like all artists, participates in an ongoing conversation, building on ideas across time. Artists inspire one another’s creativity. Painting is a form of embodied expression that embraces ambiguity and uncertainty. There is space for multiple interpretations.
