Warren Rohrer made this painting, Apple 4, with horizontal strokes of beige and light brown paint. Rohrer was really interested in how the process of making art could be a way of understanding the world. The surface has a kind of woven quality because of all the lines. Look closely and you can see thin layers of paint, almost transparent, built up on top of each other. There's a real sensitivity to the materials here, and it’s tempting to see some connection to Agnes Martin’s quiet, minimal grids. While Rohrer’s approach is clearly very different to Martin’s, both artists embrace a kind of ambiguity and openness in their work, inviting us to bring our own experiences and interpretations to the table. For Rohrer, painting wasn't about representing the world, but more about finding a kind of harmony within it.
