Neville Keasberry created this photograph of the Kali Brantas bridge south of Malang. The composition is defined by a strong horizontal axis in the iron bridge which spans the river. This is countered by the diagonal lines of the riverbanks, creating a series of triangles and trapezoids that give the image a sense of depth and stability. The black and white medium accentuates contrasts in texture, from the smooth, flowing water to the dense foliage of the surrounding forest. Notice how the structural elements of the bridge are prominently displayed against the organic backdrop. Keasberry’s juxtaposition of the man-made structure with the natural landscape invites reflections on modernity and its impact on the environment. The bridge is an imposition of order and technology upon the fluid and untamed river, yet the image does not present a simple dichotomy. Instead, it suggests a complex interplay between these forces. The bridge's geometry imposes a formal grid, challenging our perception of space and place.
