Nicholas Roerich painted “White and Celestial,” an ethereal landscape, sometime during his extensive travels through Asia in the early 20th century. Roerich, a Russian artist and mystic, was deeply influenced by the spiritual traditions of the East, particularly Buddhism. In this painting, we see a series of mountain peaks piercing through layers of clouds. Roerich’s use of soft blues and whites creates a sense of otherworldly calm, yet these stark blues, in a way, can be interpreted as also creating a sense of distance. His paintings weren’t mere landscapes but were intended to evoke a sense of spiritual awakening, and reverence for the natural world. Roerich believed that art could be a universal language, capable of uniting humanity across cultural and religious divides. In “White and Celestial,” Roerich invites us to contemplate our place within the vastness of the cosmos, encouraging a sense of interconnectedness with the world around us.
