Wijnand Otto Jan Nieuwenkamp made this print of two men sawing wood in a Verona workshop with a view of a bridge and city beyond. I can imagine the artist sketching this scene from life, perhaps sitting on a stool with his sketchbook, trying to capture the light and shadow. He must have found something captivating in this everyday scene. I love how he's built up the image with all these tiny, careful marks. Look at the wood: it's almost like he's feeling his way through the texture. The image is so detailed, so full of lines, but still so serene. The perspective draws your eye from the workshop right through to the city and the buildings in the distance. It reminds me that, as artists, we're always looking for ways to connect what's in front of us with the wider world.
