This old photograph of a portion of Mheer Castle seems to have been created as an exercise in preservation. I can imagine the photographer carefully positioning themselves, trying to capture the essence of the building's architecture and history. What might they have been thinking as they framed this shot? Were they focused on documenting every detail, or were they trying to evoke a sense of the castle's past? The sepia tones, the shadows and light playing across the stone walls, give the photograph a softness that belies the solidity of the castle itself. The texture of the stone and the pattern of the windows create a sense of depth, drawing us into the image. It’s almost like a painting in its tonal range. It reminds me of the work of other photographers, who use light and shadow to create a sense of atmosphere and mood. It reminds us that artists are always in conversation across time, inspiring one another.
