This drawing of a masher, of unknown date, was made by an anonymous artist with pen and ink on paper. The artist uses a restricted palette of earthy browns and tans, echoing the object’s material. What I find fascinating is the commitment to representing the grain and texture of the wood. Look at how the parallel lines suggest the form of the masher while also mapping its surface. If you zoom in to the base of the handle, you’ll notice the lines become denser and more concentrated, creating an almost topographical map of the object. I like to imagine the artist absorbed in the process, patiently building up the image through repetition. It reminds me of the drawings of Agnes Martin, of Sol Lewitt, but also the quiet contemplation of Morandi. It speaks to the power of simple forms and humble materials, and how much can be revealed through sustained attention.
