Here's a photograph, of a river with buildings and a chimney, it was made by an anonymous artist. The buildings across the river bank are blocky, but the smoke rising from the chimney drifts and fades. It’s a nice reminder that art isn’t just about capturing a scene, but about how the world is always in flux. Looking closely at this print, you can see how the grainy texture almost dissolves the scene. It's hard to tell what's really there, it's like trying to recall a memory. The softness of the image, the way the light seems to bleed into the shadows, it all creates this feeling of distance, like you're looking at something that's both there and not there. This reminds me of the photographs of Eugène Atget, who was also interested in capturing these fleeting moments of urban life. He saw beauty in the everyday, the ordinary. It's a reminder that art can be found in the most unexpected places.
