Editor: So, here we have an untitled etching by Jasper Johns. It's a fascinatingly chaotic take on the American flag, all done in these frantic, scribbled lines. What do you see in this piece? Curator: It feels like Johns is grappling with the very idea of the flag, not just depicting it. The loose lines almost make it disintegrate before your eyes. It's like a memory, or maybe a feeling, of America, rather than a literal representation. What does it evoke for you? Editor: I guess it feels like unease, a sort of questioning of what the flag even means anymore. The way the stars and stripes are barely there suggests a fragility. Curator: Absolutely! It’s a powerful statement, isn’t it? It reminds us that symbols are never fixed; they’re always open to interpretation, to questioning, to reimagining. Editor: Definitely given me a lot to consider about the symbols around us.
