Anny Leusink made "Willem slaapt in een landschap bij nacht" with ink and gouache on paper. The whole image is built up with these marks which are at times sketchy and illustrative but elsewhere convey real depth and texture. I love how the dark, hatching lines in the sky suggest movement and drama. The light areas in the drawing aren't just white space; they feel like a palpable, dreamy glow. It's like she's not just depicting a landscape, but a state of mind, all with the simplest of means. Look at the way she uses the white gouache on the tree branches, this creates a sculptural effect and contrast. The ink is fluid and almost calligraphic in places. It’s as if you can see her process, her thinking with the brush, right there on the surface. It reminds me of some of Odilon Redon’s dreamlike, symbolist drawings, where the image emerges from a dark, inky ground. What is the nature of dreams? This piece leaves it open to interpretation, and for that, I’m grateful.
