Editor: Hokumyō’s "Shichirigahama in Sagami Province," a woodblock print from the 1830s, presents us with a seemingly simple scene. The tranquil blue of the water contrasts beautifully with Mount Fuji in the distance, but there is a tension between geometric forms. How would you interpret this serene yet structured work? Curator: You've picked up on something very important about this image! This is not just a tranquil, pretty scene for decorative purposes, which might be someone’s immediate impression. For me, it's the blend of serenity and constructedness that I find endlessly fascinating. I wonder about that balance...The landscape is idealized. The woodblock technique, with its precise lines, feels intentionally removed from any kind of… messy reality, shall we say? There is a spiritual aspect here. What does Mount Fuji represent to you in this work? Editor: I see Fuji as a symbol of permanence, maybe even hope, set against the fleeting nature of the sea and clouds. Curator: Exactly! The ukiyo-e tradition frequently uses the natural world to make more important points. The way nature interacts with, or seems separate from, the everyday experience is something this highlights. A place like Shichirigahama Beach can be both a place for life and livelihood as well as something sublime! Editor: I see what you mean, there is also something geometric to the natural forms here as well, from the shapes in the ocean to Fuji. Curator: A keen eye indeed! A connection between structure and the natural world. Perhaps it is less of a disconnect between the world, and rather humanity seeing nature in such terms. Editor: It is wonderful how seemingly simple prints like this hold so many layers of meaning. Curator: And I adore the layers you find within! It is indeed quite special and something I’m now more grateful to consider.
