Robert Morris made this untitled artwork, and it is all about form, space and perception. Just imagine Morris in his studio, welding and shaping metal mesh, trying out different forms and how they interact with the surrounding space. The sculpture is this sort of three-dimensional puzzle, part cube, part dome, that plays with your sense of depth. From one side it looks like a neat box; from another, it's like a building with a vaulted roof! It might remind you of other minimalist artists, like Donald Judd, who were trying to strip art down to its bare essentials. The mesh creates an illusion and challenges our perception of what’s solid and what’s transparent. It’s as though Morris is inviting us to question what we see. Isn’t that what artists do? We are all in an ongoing conversation, exchanging ideas across time and space.
