This is a big, untitled sculpture made by Robert Morris, using expanded metal. It is like a cage with rounded sides, a shape that is both there and not there, almost like a drawing in space. You can see through it, but it still defines an area. The grid is so regular, yet it sits on the floor in a way that feels kind of haphazard. The metal itself has a rough, industrial feel, but the shape is oddly graceful. Morris was interested in how simple forms could change our perception of space. Think about the way the light filters through the mesh, creating shadows and patterns around it. It’s a bit like a minimalist version of a landscape. This piece makes me think of Sol LeWitt’s open cubes, they share a similar interest in basic geometric forms and how they interact with the space around them. Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide what it means, there's no right or wrong answer, and that's the beauty of art.
