Marina Pallares made 'Animals', a large painting filled with creatures in a jungle of geometrical green and yellow shapes. I can imagine Pallares building up this world bit by bit, maybe starting with that long red dog, stretching across the middle of the canvas like a hotdog. Then the painterly problem arises - what next? Oh, I know, an elephant, a fish, a giraffe. A whole zoo. I imagine she's pushing and pulling, layering and tweaking, constantly adjusting the balance and harmony of the composition. Look how Pallares animates each animal with its own patterns and colors, she's creating a symphony of textures and colors. It kind of reminds me of outsider art and folk art with its naive charm and playful spirit. I like to think that Marina Pallares would be happy to know that her animal kingdom is now part of an ongoing conversation with other painters, inspiring new ways of seeing and experiencing the world.
