Editor: Adja Yunkers’ “Night” presents these enigmatic figures in what seems like a theatrical scene. It’s evocative, but also unsettling. What sociopolitical narratives do you think might be at play here? Curator: The figures certainly do evoke a sense of drama. Yunkers, as a Latvian émigré, lived through immense social upheaval. Consider how the stark contrasts and fragmented forms might reflect the instability and alienation felt by many during the mid-20th century, particularly refugees. Do you see any other elements that might underscore this reading? Editor: The darkness pressing in on the figures, maybe? It’s interesting to consider Yunkers’ personal experience as informing the sense of displacement in the composition. Curator: Exactly. The use of color and form speaks volumes about the human condition amidst historical turmoil. I’m glad we could look at it from this angle.
