Editor: Here we have J.F. van der Bruggen’s ‘Ring van goud met citrien,’ a gold ring with a citrine stone, dating from around 1962 to 1970. It has this fantastic retro feel. I'm curious – what's your take on this striking piece? Curator: Oh, it whispers of a different time, doesn’t it? A time when optimism seemed to drip like honey, just like the color of that citrine. For me, it's about capturing light. See how the artist cradles the gem with those meticulously arranged gold bands? They are not just holding the stone, but almost amplifying its glow, giving it a second sunset all of its own. What does it evoke in you? Editor: Definitely some major mid-century vibes, but with an artisanal twist, and those linear gold elements remind me a little bit of architecture… or maybe even abstracted bundles of wheat! Curator: Absolutely, it plays with structure and the organic, doesn’t it? It has a powerful grounding quality with that substantial band, yet elevates it all to pure light with that gemstone. Did they choose citrine to invite a sunnier disposition, I wonder? I tend to be drawn into its hidden, private significance for both creator and beholder, because for them, what feelings might it embody? Editor: Interesting point about its 'hidden' meaning... I was just focusing on how eye-catching it is! It’s made me appreciate that jewellery can have multiple, really profound layers. Curator: It is, after all, a deeply personal experience. Jewellery holds sentiments of love, grief, celebration… that’s its magic, the dance of the aesthetic with lived memory. Editor: Absolutely, and the dialogue we create around art certainly adds yet another perspective. I’ll never look at rings quite the same way.
