Alevtyna Kakhidze’s drawing presents a lecture on gender, sex, and identity, rendered with a stark and immediate visual language. The symbols of chromosomes (XX and XY) and the words “gender” and “sex” leap out, acting as focal points in a complex contemporary dialogue. Consider how ancient symbols of fertility and the male/female binary have evolved. The chromosomal symbols here represent a modern attempt to define identity through science, yet they exist alongside question marks, indicating the limits of such definition. We are left to consider the fluidity of identity. The symbols, meant to clarify, instead open a Pandora’s Box of questions. The visual presentation, reminiscent of a classroom, evokes a sense of both learning and interrogation. Like a recurring dream, the quest for self-understanding continues across generations, each era reinterpreting ancient symbols. The human need to define ourselves emotionally and physically remains a powerful force that transcends time.
