It's not known when Ruth Vollmer made ‘In Relation Three to Four’ but it is a photograph. What I find interesting about this picture is the relationship between the sphere and the boxes. The forms are simple and geometric, and the photo is in black and white, which gives it a timeless quality. I can imagine Vollmer experimenting in her studio, shifting things around, trying to see how these shapes interact. It must have been exciting for her, seeing how the light plays off the curves of the sphere. The flat surfaces of the boxes create these wonderful contrasts. There's something very satisfying and clean about the lines, edges, and tonal variations in the image. I look at Vollmer, and I think of other sculptors like Barbara Hepworth and painters like Agnes Martin. They’re all on the same journey, exploring form and space. Artists are always in conversation with one another across time. Vollmer’s work leaves room for thinking, wondering, and figuring things out for yourself. I find that openness really inspiring.
