Ruth Vollmer seems to have made In Relation Three to Four with metal or plaster, or both, and light, in order to describe what she saw. It's about a way of seeing, a process of making forms that come from a deep looking. Think about the surface of these forms, the reflected light on the curves. There are shadows, she’s looking at light as if it’s a physical thing. We can consider how the light describes the material. Is the sphere a heavy, weighty object, or a kind of shell, capturing a play of light? I see her looking, looking, looking. We could put her together with Eva Hesse, with Agnes Martin. Vollmer is asking, how do we see? How do we make form? Art is never really about answers, is it? It's about constantly questioning, about the exchange of ideas, of forms, over time.
