Henri Matisse presents us with an image of lemons in oil on a pewter plate. At first glance, it is a simple still life; however, consider the lemon itself, a symbol laden with cultural significance. Throughout history, the lemon has appeared as a symbol of bitterness or deception, yet also as a representation of purification, health, and even paradise. We see depictions of citrus fruit in Roman frescoes, and they reappear in Dutch Golden Age paintings. Though presented as simple objects, the lemon’s presence carries a deeper resonance. Matisse’s use of the lemon allows us to consider the layers of meaning infused into everyday objects. They evoke a powerful, if subconscious, connection to centuries of symbolic use. The persistence of these symbols reveals how our collective cultural memory shapes and reshapes meaning across time.
