This is a baseball card depicting Quinn, a catcher for the Baltimore Orioles, from the Old Judge series of trading cards. The card was produced by Goodwin & Company in 1889 as part of a promotion for Old Judge Cigarettes. The black and white photograph shows Quinn in a baseball uniform, in a catcher’s stance, holding his glove and looking directly at the viewer. The card is currently located in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, NY. This type of trading card is a prime example of early 20th-century advertising, and its visual style helped usher in a new era of sports memorabilia and collecting.
