Curator: Victor Willing's "Place with a Red Thing" presents a stark yet intriguing composition. I'm immediately struck by the enigmatic quality of the objects rendered with such simple forms. Editor: Curator: Indeed, the reductive nature allows us to explore the essence of form and color; the red contrasts wonderfully against the muted blues and browns. But, understanding Willing’s life, particularly his struggle with mental illness, is essential. Editor: Curator: While I agree personal context can be illuminating, let's not overlook the purely visual dialogue here. The tension between the geometric shapes and the implied depth is fascinating. How do you feel Willing’s psychological state shaped the work? Editor: Curator: His surrealist leanings and personal symbolism certainly played a role, especially considering his interest in Jungian psychology. These objects could represent repressed desires or hidden traumas. Editor: I find the materiality of the paint equally compelling, the way he builds up layers to create texture, almost like a sculptural relief. Editor: Curator: Absolutely, that physicality adds another layer to its interpretation. Ultimately, "Place with a Red Thing" is a testament to Willing's capacity to transform personal struggles into a potent artistic statement. Editor: The painting invites us to contemplate form, color, and our own subjective interpretations.

This imaginary scene contains an odd collection of items, dominated by the 'red thing' named in the title. Willing wrote that the red thing 'is a tumescent thing. So much a living thing that it bleeds. While painting it I did think of it as a seedling form, but with blood, in a place of stones...Later other associations, phallic, crucifixion, doomed whale, whirling movement came to mind. It comes up out of the earth, it is not resting on it only'. Gallery label, September 2004
