Robert Frank made this photographic contact sheet, "Venice, Italy 33," with gelatin silver, and, well, isn't it just a bunch of little worlds bumping up against each other? The whole thing is about process: seeing the artist selecting the images, as if we’re standing alongside him in the darkroom. It’s not about one perfect image, but the evidence of Frank's decisions. Look closely, you'll see he’s circled a few frames in red. Those red rings are loud! They shout "look here," but do they point to the best shots, or just the ones that caught his eye in the moment? That’s how Frank’s work always hits me - a little rough, a little unsure, but full of feeling. Like when you're painting and you make a mistake, but you just go with it. Think of someone like Garry Winogrand and his street photography – that same sense of catching life as it tumbles, not trying to pretty it up. It’s less about answers and more about that beautiful, messy searching.
