Hermanus Fock created this drawing, "Minerva met ganzepen," using pen and gray ink, sometime before 1822. Notice how the artist utilizes delicate lines and tonal variations to depict Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom and strategic warfare, floating on clouds while holding a blank oval shield. The ethereal quality is enhanced by the radiating lines that emanate from behind Minerva, creating a divine aura. The composition is structured by the contrast between the detailed rendering of the goddess and the open space of the shield. The shield functions as a signifier, inviting viewers to project their interpretations and understandings of wisdom and power onto it. The blankness challenges the conventional representation of Minerva, prompting a re-evaluation of her attributes. It destabilizes fixed meanings and engages with new ways of thinking about representation. The formal qualities of line and space prompt us to consider how artistic representation can function as a site of ongoing interpretation, where meaning is not fixed but actively constructed through engagement.
