Curator: This is Nikki S. Lee's "The Hip Hop Project (2)," part of a series where Lee investigates subcultures by temporarily immersing herself in them. Editor: Immediately, the cool tones and shallow depth of field create a kind of urban stillness, an almost staged casualness. Curator: Lee's project engages with performativity and identity. She uses photography to challenge notions of authenticity and belonging within specific social groups. Editor: The composition, though, is quite deliberate. The subjects are posed symmetrically. It is stable, but feels slightly unnatural. Curator: Exactly! The photo plays on authenticity, making us question the role of the artist and the subjects in constructing this image of "hip hop." Editor: The slightly muted color palette also enhances the sense of considered artifice. It's less about documentation and more about constructed representation. Food for thought!
